Creating A More Joyful LIfe

Creating A More Joyful LIfe

In today’s high-tech, instant-gratification world, many people think it’s easy to attain happiness. We have the world at our fingertips, with access to entertainment and information that our parents and grandparents could only dream about. But in this fast-paced, hectic world, we can often find ourselves feeling overwhelmed and undervalued. Create a more joyful and balanced life by going back to basics and appreciating life’s little things.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Start the Morning Right
When the alarm goes off, your head might quickly fill with endless to-do lists, responsibilities, and obligations so establish a routine that will help achieve a successful day by starting your morning right. Allow yourself enough time to let your brain properly wake up by enjoying a few peaceful moments before getting out of bed. When you do get up, drink a full glass of water to rehydrate your body. Take a couple of minutes to stretch. Shake out your arms and legs and feel your blood start to pump. Create time to exercise, even if it’s only 5 or 10 minutes, and set aside a few minutes for silent reflection and prayer. Creating a morning routine with these kind of elements will naturally energize you and will make your morning feel less stressful.

  • Eat Healthier
With countless diets, super-foods, and food villains, it’s hard to separate fact from fictitious, marketed hype. Instead of forcing yourself to stick to a specific fad diet, use common sense and proven dietary principles. Try to maintain a healthful diet that primarily consists of vegetables and healthful fats, and supplement them with protein and some fruits. Familiarize yourself with the ingredients listed on foods you consume. If the ingredients are full of words you don’t know, it’s probably not something you want to be putting in your body. When you shop for groceries, sticking to the outside perimeter of the store is usually a safe bet for finding the more natural and less processed foods.  You don’t have to completely shun less healthful foods, but be mindful of how much of them you are eating and try to wean yourself down to just a few portions.

  • Get Perspective
With bills to pay, children to raise, houses to clean, and work projects to complete, you may feel like your life is out of control. Learn to let the small things slide and focus on what really matters. There may be toys carpeting your children’s bedrooms floors, but the clutter is not earth-shattering. You may be eager to advance in your career, but will taking on more projects than you can comfortably handle really improve your life? Probably not. Schedule some time away from everything to relax or take a silent solo retreat. Remember, your life is not a dress rehearsal. There are no do-overs or re-takes, so you should make your time here as fulfilling and impactful as possible.

  • Find a Higher Purpose

Without a life purpose, you may feel as though you’re just going through the motions of living, instead of seizing each day. Finding a higher purpose in life is extremely important. It’s easy to get bogged down with all of the little things, but it’s important to take time to discover your “raison d’être”; the reason you’re here. When you have a passion, your life will naturally go in the right direction and all of the extra noise will fade away. Think about the important things in life and devote time to them.  Figure out what you want to be remembered for.  Identify who and what are most important to you that aren’t getting your best and change that.  Find places to serve others where you have a passion to make a difference. Engage in hobbies and activities during your week that contribute to your desired life.  You were created with a purpose so whatever your purpose is, find it, embrace it, and use it to guide each day.

It’s a cliché to say to live life outside the box, but it’s a cliché for a reason: it works! By living the life you were called to live and defining what is important to you personally, you’ll avoid feeling frustrated and powerless. It’s time to stop relegating yourself to a supporting role. Embrace each new day, nourish your body, soul, and spirit, appreciate life’s blessings, and pursue your purpose and you’ll create a well-balanced, more joyful, and more impactful life.
